World Financial Center Evacuated After Suspicious Package Discovered

A bomb scare occurred in Lower Manhattan before this early morning after a suspicious package was uncovered at Brookfield Office Properties’ Two World Financial Center. Staff from Nomura ended up evacuated after a package deal — which contained a tool that resembled an explosive — was detected by a scanner within the building’s mail area, GlobeSt.com has learned. As of 12:25 p.m., the brand new York City Police Department has confirmed which the merchandise was a novelty grenade.

At the scene, an NYPD official says “the authorities have responded, the bomb squad has responded, and anything is now safe.”

UPDATE: The NYPD now confirms the suspicious package contained a novelty grenade mounted on a plaque. People are being allowed back into the building.

The New York Times reports that the gag grenade was hung on a plaque that had some cheeky office humor on it, reading, “Complaint department, pull pin.”
