Colosseum is located in Rome, Italy, and built from 70-82 Century. The name ‘colosseum’ was taken from a name ‘Colossus‘, a statue as high as 130 feet (40 meters). Colossus statue was rebuilt as an exchange of Nero, resemblance of Sol ( God of Sun), by adding sun crown on.

In Italy, Colosseum is named il colosseo, while in other part of Rome, colosseum is called e colisée and el coliseo. Colosseum is also called Flavian Amphitheatre.

Samurai after Meiji Restoration

During Meiji authority, the samurai was dismissed. To protect country’s sovereignty, Meiji established an army which was taken from samurai and civilian through military due.

The elimination of samurai was automatically put samurai into aside. The samurai then tried to seek job to live their life. The samurai then became artist, farmers, traders, and some of them became attorney. While some other parts of the samurai still last the martial arts by founding Kendo Institutions.

Though the ’samurai’ had been dismissed, but the spirit and strength still be memorized and proud of.

Meiji restoration

Call of war which was echoing throughout Japan is Sonno Joi which means the return of the Emperor and pursuing the uncivilized. The conquest of emperor means the raising value of Japanese traditional value. The Daimyo which had the strongest territory in Japan were the ones initiate the Shogun’s authority.

Fight against Shogun Tokugawa by Meiji was not without a cause. Some factors behind the war were :

  • the Daimyo which wanted reshuffle in Japanese Government
  • the traders, who intentionally finance the rebellion against Shogun as their business expansion
  • the samurai who wanted to use their swords for heroic terms
  • the farmers who wanted to get a bigger share of their hard-work

Musashi Miyamoto

Musashi Miyamoto is one among samurai which is very famous, and had been considered as ‘the God of sword’ in Japan. Mushashi was born when Japan was still in civil war (onin). Musashi was known as the one that always brings two swords anywhere. When the army was dismissed by Hideyoshi and Leyasu, many of the Ronin ( samurai with no master ) wandered with no destination

Ronin lived apart from society. Samurai that time became an isolated which still holds the ancient tradition of military art of Japan.  Musashi - which in the golden of Samurai is considered the best ever - kept him self as a Ronin, by searching for enlightment through kendo. samurai during Shogun Tokugawa

Tokugawa had been fearful of rebellion, therefore, a rule was made towards the Daimyo, that was Daimyo must live in capital. They were allowed to inspect their provinces once in a time, and not allowed to bring their family with them.

Samurai was a civil servant of the feudal, which was very loyal, to the authority and to the system of the country which counted on military. Samurai served a Shogun/Jenderalisimo which beat the barbarian ( Ruth Benedic, 1979). In each province, Shogun has Daimyo which authored the province/perfecture. Daimyo had samurai who’s been loyal with all their body and soul .

noble caste of Samurai

samurai_01Samurai in the past was getting into noble caste. They were a high class society with special rights. The Tokugawa period ( 1603) had signed the changing history on Japanese society. Tokugawa authority had spread over to thoroughly to the entire part of life, from education, legal act, government, and almost all level including suit and behavior of every level of society was being managed.

There were four class in Japanese society that time, first is Samurai, farmers, artists, and trader.

the spirit of Samurai

Japanese is a country that is well-known with the so called ‘country of sakura’ or else ‘ sunrise country’. Hearing the word ‘Japan’ , for me, it is so identical with the term ‘samurai‘, a social community of Japanese heroes/soldiers.

The Japanese have a deep pride towards samurai, and so many kinds of stories, comics and movies to memorize it. It seems that the term ’samurai’ doesn’t belong to Japanese only, it has been worldwide know. Even in the country I live, Indonesia, movies like Samurai X , Ronin the warrior, and some other samurai comics are familiar.
