Big Ten Expansion
The Big Ten Conference released a statement Tuesday saying it will look into expansion over the next 12 to 18 months.
The statement said the Big Ten Council of Presidents/Chancellors believes the timing is right to “conduct a thorough evaluation of options for conference structure and expansion.” As such, the council requested that commissioner Jim Delany make recommendations over the next year-plus.
The conference last added a team in 1990, when Penn State joined as the 11th school. The statement released Tuesday said the conference and council had looked into the issue of expansion in 1993, 1998 and 2003.
The release said the council asked the conference to provide information on preliminary options and recommendations, but that step won’t include formal discussions with other schools.
