Courtney Love Loses Legal Guardianship Of Daughter Frances Bean
Courtney Love has lost legal guardianship of her Frances Bean Cobain, the 17-year-old daughter she had with late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain.
According to a filing in Los Angeles Superior Court, temporary guardianship of Cobain has been granted to her grandmother (and Kurt Cobain’s mother), Wendy O’Connor, and his aunt, Kimberly Dawn Cobain. No reason was given for decision, nor does the filing — which occurred on Friday (December 11) — mention Love.
According to TMZ, temporary guardianships are established by the court “when the parent is not capable of taking care of their children.” Love was reportedly not in court when the filing occurred.
The temporary guardianship, which is valid until February, does not give O’Connor and Cobain power over the trust established after Kurt Cobain’s death. The filing has been made public — however, the court proceedings will remain sealed.
A spokesperson for Love’s management did not respond to MTV News’ request for comment on the matter.
In early 2005, Love won a lengthy legal battle to regain custody of Frances Bean from O’Connor. Following Love’s 2003 overdose and subsequent arrest on drug charges, Cobain was put in O’Connor’s custody, and an ugly trial — which included Love and O’Connor scuffling outside a Los Angeles courthouse — ensued. Love was ordered to move out of her home so that Frances could live there with her nanny and supervised by Love’s stepfather, Frank Rodriguez, and her aunt.
Following her arrest, Love vowed to clean up for the sake of her child, defending her parenting skills on Howard Stern’s radio show and on “The View.”
