“I hope you celebrate with us this week, laugh with us this week,” she said. ”I’ve calculated — 2,881 shows. Roughly.”

Sawyer is set to take over Charle Gibson’s role as anchor of World News Tonight December 18 as he retires. Sawyer will be ABC’s first female news anchor. Katie Couric became the first female anchor of any news station when she started at CBS several years ago.

GMAco-anchor Robin Roberts said it would be difficult to lose “my Thelma.”  “Thank you, we are going to do all things just like you this week,” Roberts said.

“It is amazing, I think to all of us, what we’ve been able to see you do on this show,” co-anchor Chris Cuomo added. “It makes us all proud.”

GMAplans to highlight Sawyer’s biggest stories and interviews during the week.
