Yankees Angels Game 2 Was A Thriller
The die-hard Yankee fans left Yankee stadium early Sunday morning tired, wet and victorious. Their beloved New York Yankees had just won game 2 of the American League Championship Series (ALCS) against the Angels in a thriller.
The game started Saturday evening under the threat of rain. While the ran held off for most of the game, the game ended after midnight and there was a steady rain. Other than just making it wet and miserable, the rain had no real impact on the game.
The Yankees took an early lead in the second inning with one run. They added another run in the third inning to make the score 2-0. The Angels fought back to tied the game 2-2 in the fifth inning.
When most games are finishing up, the rain started in the 9th inning. The score was tied, so the game continued into extra innings.
The score stayed tied and the rain continued to fall going into the 11th inning. The Angels took the lead 3-2 during the top of the 11th and only need three outs and they would tie the series.
Yankees’ Alex Rodriguez had other plans. A-Rod homered to send the game into 12 innings. The rain continued on as well.
Neither team was able to score in the 12th inning. The Yankees prevented the Angels from scoring in the top of the 13th inning and took to bat in the bottom.
The Yankees put runners on 1st and 2nd bases. Melky Cabrera stepped up to bat with one out. His grounder was fielded cleanly by 2nd basemen Maicer Izturis.
Izturis decided to go for the double play to end the inning and threw to second base. The throw was wild and allowed Jerry Hairston to score from 2nd.
Hairston is in his 12th season of his career. His single to get him on base in the 13th inning and eventually win the game for the Yankees, was his first ever post-season at bat. Yankee fans will agree he made the most of it. He also got a pie in his face by fellow teammate, A.J. Burnett as the team celebrated their win.
The Yankees win a thriller against the Angels 4-3 in 13 innings. After winning game 1 by the score 4-1, the Yankees take a two game lead over the Angels heading into game 3 on Monday at the Angel Stadium. Two more wins and the Yankees will be in their first World Series since 2003.
